The piriformis is a small, thick, flat muscle located in the buttocks region under the gluteal muscles This muscle is important in the lower body because it stabilizes the hip joint, and allows you to lift and rotate your thigh away from your body (external rotation). These are key movements when we are trying to walk, shift our weight from one foot to another, maintain balance and sports. But what does it have to do with the sciatic nerve?
